Brow's Plan For British Jobs Fails To Tackle Fundamental Issues - Alexander

2.03.32pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 10th Sep 2007

Commenting on Gordon Brown's speech today to the Trades Union Congress annual conference in which he outlined his plan to achieve a British job for every British worker, Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Danny Alexander MP said: "Gordon Brown's plans are a re-hash of old announcements that fail to tackle the fundamental barriers that stop people getting back to work.

"Mr Brown had nothing to say about simplifying one of the world's most complex welfare systems, so that people become better off when working.

"If economic growth is to benefit the most excluded, then much more must be done to help people on incapacity benefit and those who have never worked find a job. Labour has left those people without hope for far too long.

"Liberal Democrat plans would simplify benefits and tax credits, and massively expand the role of the private and voluntary sector to get two million more people into work."
