Unemployment figures deeply worrying - Cable12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 14th Sep 2005 Commenting on unemployment figures released today by the ONS which shows that the claimant count has risen for the seventh month in succession, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable MP said: "These figures are deeply worrying. "Growing levels of unemployment are likely to have knock-on effects on consumer spending and the fragile housing market as people get into mortgage arrears. "Although today's figures are more positive than expected, they still show a continuation of the longest period of increasing unemployment in the last 12 years. "The underlying trend in the claimant count shows that the economy is losing momentum whilst the Chancellor's continuing complacency is distressing."
