Liberal Democrats Welcome Funding for Debt Advice - Cable6.10.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 24th Jun 2005 Responding to the announcement of £45m to be made available for debt advice Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor said: "The Liberal Democrats have been calling for a huge extension in free debt advice for several years now. "It would now be welcome to see a matching contribution made from the private sector, especially banks, building societies and insurance companies. "Part of the blame for the rise in personal debt must fall on the financial services sector that is responsible for aggressive marketing and irresponsible lending. "The next step for the Government is to tackle the problem at source, by preventing a future rise in excessive indebtedness by clamping down on unsolicited mailing, reckless lending and misleading advertising."
