SALES FIGURES SHOWS CHANCELLOR IS ON EVER THINNING ICE - TAYLOR

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 19th Jun 2003

Matthew Taylor MP, Lib Dem Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer

Reacting to the latest retail sales figures, which show a fall of 0.1% in May, Matthew Taylor MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, said:

"So far the Chancellor has been able to weigh booming consumer spending against manufacturing recession. But he is skating on ever thinning ice.

"As the recession in manufacturing spreads to sales, the Chancellor is faced with the prospect of an imbalanced economy turning into a no-growth economy.

"If Britain is to earn the money to pay for the Chancellor's spending plans, the economy's problems must be addressed."
