Business Must Support Pregnant Women
10.15.00am GMT Wed 2nd Feb 2005
Commenting on the Equal Opportunities Commission survey on pregnancy discrimination, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Children, Annette Brooke MP said: "It is disgraceful that in the 21st Century, women who are pregnant experience any kind of discrimination in the work place.
"Draconian treatment of so many women is simply unacceptable and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.
"Pregnant women and business should work together to understand what support and financial help is available to them. Small and medium sized enterprises need more information so they can manage maternity leave and avoid unnecessary bureaucracy or costs."
"Businesses and the Government should recognise that investment in children, child care and parental support has long term benefits for all."
"Liberal Democrat maternity policy would reduce bureaucracy by simplifying maternity leave benefits and help both mothers and fathers spend time with their children."
