Letwin: From Fantasy Island to Fantasy Economics - Cable

8.19.00pm GMT Mon 17th Jan 2005

Commenting on the launch of Conservative tax and spend policies, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Dr Vince Cable MP, said: "Mr Letwin once promised to put all asylum seekers on an unnamed desert island to solve the issue of immigration to the UK. Today he has gone from fantasy island to fantasy economics.

"These proposals are a dishonest and opportunistic attempt by a party that has realised that they have no chance of winning the next general election.

"Oliver Letwin has failed to acknowledge that tough choices need to be made in spending. The idea that they can increase spending on health, education, policing, international development and defence, cut taxes and correct any budget deficit by removing waste in the public sector is laughably implausible.

"The Conservatives cannot afford these plans without introducing serious cuts to our public services.

"It is the Liberal Democrats who are the real opposition. Only we have put forward fully costed policies.

"Proposing such enormous savings based on contracting out of Job Centre Plus are ludicrously unrealistic. David Willets has today conceded that job cuts in this service would lead to a wholly unsatisfactory position of volunteers giving essential job and benefit advice."
