Welcome Tory Conversion To Transparent Government Overdue - Cable
7.20.00am GMT Wed 8th Dec 2004
Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, today welcomed the Conservatives' conversion to the idea of independently monitoring the Government accounts and freeing national statistics from political interference.
Responding to the launch of the Framework for Fiscal Accountability and the Framework for Statistical Accountability, Dr Cable said:
"Today's proposals appear identical to the plans we put forward only a few weeks ago. It is good to see that, with the exception of the Chancellor, there is a political consensus building to prevent the Government from both setting its own tests and then marking its own results.
"Liberal Democrats fully agree with the idea of an independent national statistics office and with plans to increase transparency.
"The growing controversy about un-funded public sector liabilities from pensions, and the vast sums identified by Adair Turner's Commission, further underline the need for an independent system of statistics collection and verification."
