Trust Must Be Restored In Fiscal Policy - Cable
5.15.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 29th Oct 2004
Commenting on the forecasts published today in the National Institute Economic Review, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Dr Vince Cable MP, said: "It is unclear whether Gordon Brown will meet his 'golden rule', especially if there is a major economic shock such as a crash in house prices.
"It is high time that the Government introduced a genuinely independent system for monitoring its performance in fiscal policy. As things stand the Government makes its own assumptions and decides what will be audited allowing itself a great deal of 'wiggle' room."
