5.13.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 19th Oct 2004

Commenting on reports that UK businesses lost more than £40bn last year because of economic crime, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "Businesses are the source of their own undoing in the majority of cases.

"Lack of vigilance at the highest levels is ultimately costing British businesses millions.

"It isn't just businesses which are losing money. The real costs of economic crime are passed on to consumers."
