Amicus' Support Of Coal And Nuclear Power Is Outdated

1.15.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 18th Oct 2004

Britain is facing winter power blackouts and rising energy prices, because of a lack of generating capacity and a reliance on supplies from unstable foreign countries, according to Amicus. Commenting on the warnings, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "It's absurd to suggest that countries like Norway are unstable.

"British gas suppliers are exporting supplies to the Continent.

"What needs to be investigated is why British consumers are paying record prices for importing gas back from the Continent.

"Amicus' peddling coal and nuclear power is fantasy land. Coal power pollutes and nuclear power is horrendously expensive.

"The Government should be promoting polices to support the efficiencies of Combined Heat and Power systems."
