Integrity Missing In Government U Turn
6.44.53pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 18th Oct 2004
Commenting on reports that Government Ministers have watered down new rules to stop corruption and bribery in the export market, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said "If these reports are true, the Export Credits Guarantee Department has blatantly been pressurised into softening its campaign against bribery and corruption.
"The Government and the ECGD are doing nothing to alter the attitude of British businesses and their toleration of international corruption.
"The business sector and the Government have to show a higher level of integrity than demonstrated in this potential u-turn.
"Removing the teeth from anti-bribery procedures will severely undermine moves to address the culture of international sleaze."
