Accelerated Post Office Closure Is A Matter For Government

3.48.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 5th May 2004

Responding to the Prime Minister's assertions, during PMQs, that post office closures were a matter for Post Office Ltd, and not for the Government, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "The accelerated programme of post office closures is very much the responsibility of Government.

"It is only the detailed application of that plan which is the responsibility of the company.

"Without capitalisation of the post office, and encouragement to diversify, the network will continue to shrink.

"There needs to be a much more coherent and long term strategy that will not only secure the network, but encourage new entrants."
