Royal Mail Needs Comprehensive Investigation
11.56.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 30th Apr 2004
Commenting on the Channel 4 documentary about Royal Mail, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "There are many hard working, and honest, Royal Mail staff across the country who will be rightly horrified by last night's programme."
"It would be wrong to tar all those with the same brush as the few individuals concerned in the Despatches programme."
"Future confidence in Royal Mail is now dependent on addressing the deeper malaise at the heart of the company."
"Lost mail, wildcat strikes, huge fines and outdated equipment are crippling the company and will severely undermine its attempts to fight off competition from the Dutch and German postal services."
"The Government's only response so far is to promise an investigation into the criminality detailed in the programme."
"The remit of that investigation should be widened, and published, to ensure that root and branch issues of the day to day workings are examined."
