Government's Energy Plan Is Major Climbdown
11.49.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 27th Apr 2004
Commenting ahead of today's statement by the Government on its long-awaited Energy Efficiency Action Plan, Andrew Stunell MP, Liberal Democrat Energy Spokesman, said: "After so much talk, this Government has produced a whimper of an action plan. It delivers nothing new. The Government is backtracking on its commitment to cut household carbon emissions by 5 million tonnes per year until 2010. Now the target is an embarrassing 4.2 million tonnes per year - a reduction of 16%."
"Since the Royal Commission Report on Environmental Pollution in 2000, there has been a steady climb down the ladder of commitment to reducing the UK's climate damage."
"Step by step the Government is going down to a bargain basement climate change policy. It won't work, it won't last, and it won't do."
