RETAIL GROWTH FIGURES MAKE BROWN'S FORECASTS LOOK INCREASINGLY UNREALISTIC - TAYLOR

10.59.30am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 22nd May 2003

Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor fo the Exchequer, Matthew Taylor MP

Reacting to today's retail sales figures, which shows that year on year sales growth figures have fallen to 2.7%, Matthew Taylor MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, said: "After manufacturing and investment took a hammering last year there was always the risk that consumer borrowing would not continue to support retail sales growth. "

"That now appears to be happening. "Gordon Brown's optimistic growth forecasts look more unrealistic by the day."
