NEW CORPORATE KILLING LAW WELCOME - HUGHES
12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 21st May 2003
Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary and London Mayoral Candidate, Simon Hughes MP
|
Commenting on the government's announcement that it will introduce a new law of Corporate Killing, Simon Hughes MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, said:
"It took 75 MPs signing an amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill to shame the government into honouring its 1997 manifesto pledge. But better six years late than not at all."
"As the law currently stands, the risks taken by grossly negligent companies are absolutely minimal. It is surely the government's duty to send a strong message to companies which endanger lives, that such behaviour will lead to very substantial fines and loss of reputation.
"This will be particularly welcome news for the families which lost loved ones in the Marchioness disaster in my own constituency."
