Government Turning Blind Eye To Manufacturing Collapse

3.06.34pm GMT Wed 17th Mar 2004

The Government is turning a blind eye to the collapse of manufacturing, Paul Holmes MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Work, said today.

Today's new figures from the Office of National Statistics show that in the last year 88,000 jobs have been lost in the manufacturing industry, with 17,000 lost in the last quarter.

Paul Holmes MP, said: "Gordon Brown's spin and gloss cannot hide the fact that the Government is turning a blind eye to the collapse of the manufacturing industry. The Government's indifference to the thousands of jobs going to the wall is shocking."

"Ministers must get to grips with the real economy of our towns and rural areas. Small scale factory closures have as detrimental an effect on the local community as the high-profile collapses that make news headlines."
