Lyons Report Fails To Address Tough Choices

3.05.52pm GMT Mon 15th Mar 2004

Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, responding to the report by Sir Michael Lyons into the possibility of relocating Whitehall civil servants to other areas of the UK, said: "The direction of this report is welcome, but it fails to address the important issue of whether senior decision making functions should be relocated from Whitehall."

"Relocation would not only save money, but it would decentralise decision making too."

On the issue of cutting the number of civil servants, Dr Cable added: "Sir Michael is right to propose cuts, but there is no indication about what the Government proposes to do less of."

"Unlike the Liberal Democrats, this report does not begin to address the tough political choices that need to be made."
