3.03.43pm GMT Mon 15th Mar 2004
Commenting on the announcement of a £3 minimum wage for 16 and 17 years olds, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said: "In many situations, 16 and 17 year olds will be doing exactly the same job, and holding as much responsibility, as 18 year olds."
"As such, they should be receiving the same wage."
"Workers have the right to expect a minimum wage. But with this right comes a responsibility to report employers who flout the law."
"Non compliance leaves law abiding businesses facing an up hill struggle to compete on a level playing field with unscrupulous employers."
"Adequate enforcement of the minimum wage is needed for the protection of employees and employers alike."
