Clegg Welcomes Lifting Of US Steel Tariffs
5.53.00pm GMT Fri 5th Dec 2003
Nick Clegg, Liberal Democrat MEP for the East Midlands and Trade and Industry Spokesman in the European Parliament, reacting to the news said: "This is, of course, good news for all those in the East Midlands whose jobs were under threat from these tariffs but we shouldn't forget that they simply shouldn't have been illegally imposed in the first place."
He added: "It is now essential that we have a good look at the fine print to ensure that the US Administration is not attempting to protect its own industry through other means."
"Some Member States have rushed to claim credit for their special influence in this dispute over the Americans but it is quite clear, that George Bush only reacted because of sustained pressure from the European Commission and the European Union as a whole."
