Royal Mail Still Has To Prove It Can Deliver

10.33.59am GMT Thu 13th Nov 2003

Commenting on the announcement by Royal Mail of a pre-tax profit for the 6 months to September, Malcolm Bruce MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary, said: "This good news is a step forward but these small profits will be wiped out by the consequences of the recent wild cat strikes."

"Adam Crozier's reconstruction job is not made any easier by these figures, but it remains essential if the Royal Mail is to deliver for its customers. This small £3m pre-tax profit has been achieved on the basis of the 1p rise that the Government delayed for a year."

"Management and workforce must ensure that damaging and expensive strike action is not repeated if the Royal Mail is to be successful as a state-owned company."
