Clegg Welcomes WTO Move To Protect Local Steel Jobs
12.22.25pm GMT Tue 11th Nov 2003
Nick Clegg MEP, Liberal Democrat Trade and Industry Spokesman in the European Parliament, today warmly welcomed the ruling by the World Trade Organisation yesterday that George Bush's protectionist duties on UK steel products are illegal.
Mr Clegg said: "Now that US action has been shown to be clearly in breach of international law, it is urgent that George Bush should see the error of his ways and lift the punitive tariffs on UK steel imports."
"It has always been obvious that the US measures not only harmed British industry, especially in areas like the East Midlands with many steel related industries, but also destroyed American jobs themselves."
"If George Bush fails to lift duties by December 15th, the UK should give full support to the EU in taking retaliatory action against American products."

The EU has already announced it would impose tariffs on $2.2 Billion worth of US imports from mid-December if US duties are not lifted.
