War Is No Excuse For A Badly Managed Economy
12.00.00am GMT Tue 25th Mar 2003
Gordon Brown was warned today that he should not use the economic uncertainties generated by war in Iraq as an excuse for his mismanagement of the British economy. Matthew Taylor MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, said:
"It is vital for the long-term spending plans for the public services that the Chancellor does not use war as an excuse for a badly managed economy."
"The imbalances in the British economy pre-date war in Iraq by some distance. Manufacturing has been in recession for years and investment last year plunged faster than in any other major economy."
"The Chancellor must face up to his responsibilities in the Budget and act to rebalance the economy. Gordon Brown must set out plans to tax more fairly, spend more wisely and free business from his ridiculous tax complications and penchant for red tape."
