Corus Workforce Facing Uncertain Future

12.00.00am GMT Mon 17th Mar 2003

Commenting on reports that the steel company Corus have failed in their bid to raise £500m which may mean new job losses in the UK, Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary said:

"This is yet another blow for the Corus workforce. The consequence of this financial disaster will likely be substantial job losses. Our sympathy must be with Corus workers facing an uncertain future."

"The Government needs to stand ready to help workers and communities that will be effected by any job losses. Successful models of assistance exist, such as BMW/Rover, in helping people and communities adjust."
