Wind Power Alone Not Enough If UK To Lead Green Revolution

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 15th Jul 2003

Following reports that Patricia Hewitt intends a £6bn boost for Wind Power in Britain, Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, said:

"This is a significant sign that the Government is getting behind renewable energy in a big way by taking wind power above the threshold of commercial viability."

"If Britain is to meet its targets for renewable energy we should not put all our eggs in one basket by backing one technology above all others."

"We must create a diverse and balanced package if the UK is to lead the Green Revolution."

"Lots of possibilities should attract significant government investment such as tidal and solar power, and also biomass power, which in the last couple of years has been driven out of business by an unfriendly regulatory environment."
