Implementation Of Women and Work Commission Proposals Necessary - Burt

2.16.58pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 11th Sep 2006

Commenting on the Government's proposals to remove barriers facing women entering the workforce and to address the problem of the gender pay gap, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Women and Equality, Lorely Burt MP, said "The implementation of the Women and Work Commission's proposals is necessary if we are to address the persistent problems affecting women at work.

"More needs to be done to provide quality and senior part-time posts for women, but the £500,000 created for this purpose seems likely to go to subsidising companies and organisations which are able to afford to do this anyway.

"The Government must to do more to make it attractive for smaller businesses to employ people part-time, and promoting time account schemes which allow for more flexible working."

Note to Editors

Under time account schemes total annual leave is pooled under a time account agreement and the employer and employee agree a combination of work and leave in advance.
