UK's Vital Victory Over Working Time Directive Welcome - Lamb

7.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 2nd Jun 2005

Norman Lamb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow DTI Secretary, responding to the UK's victory in the first stage of its battle to maintain its opt-out from the European Working Time Directive, said:

"This is a vital success for British workers and the British economy.

"This move preserves the rights of workers' to choose what hours they work.

"If people are being exploited then of course they should have recourse to the law, but the role of the state should not be to prevent people from working the hours they want to work."
