Debate On Economic Policy Needed - Cable3.12.00pm GMT Thu 20th Jan 2005 Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Dr Vince Cable MP, today called for pre-election televised debates on the economy. Dr Cable said: "It is absolutely essential that the public are given as much information as possible on the policies of each of the parties. "The Prime Minister has already dismissed the idea of a leaders debate but this should not prohibit debates on other issues such as the economy. "A precedent was set in 1997 when the Chancellor and Shadow Chancellors debated key economic policies in televised debates. "I am writing to Oliver Letwin and Gordon Brown today to see if the same can be arranged for the coming election. "I trust that the dignity of office will not stop Gordon Brown from entering into a debate that he was more than happy to be part of when in opposition."
